The timely Canadian Audiovisual Regional Production Report 1996-97 to 2023-24, in collaboration with Quebec English-language Production Council (QEPC), highlights the challenges faced by Canada’s Official Language Minority Community (OLMC) audiovisual production in Quebec.
While total film and television production in Canada hit a record of $12.2 billion in 2022-23, English-language production in Quebec (i.e., OLMC production) declined nearly 40% to $143 million, and remains in crisis, with a clear decline in Quebec’s share of English-language CanCon production over the past two decades. Since hitting a record 27-year low in 2020-21, it has not risen above a 5% share of Canada’s total English-language production
OLMC audiovisual production remains important to Quebec’s economy, generating nearly 3,000 jobs in 2023-24, despite experiencing a steady decline over the past 25 years.
